This photo is from my brother’s album. It was taken in an unknown photo studio in Ipoh around 1958.
The girl standing at the back was my eldest sister. The girl standing on the extreme right was my second sister while the shirtless boy in short pants was my brother.
The two younger children sitting on a wooden bench were my cousins. I was not in this photo as it was taken many years before I was born.
It was very common to have photos taken in photo studios in those days.
Do you have similar childhood photos too?
Indeed it was the trend in the 50s, 60s & 70s to take photos in the photo studios. Two famous photo studios I remember is The Great Earth and Salon. There might be others but cannot remember. When photos were taken we had to be very still and smile. They was a big flash bulb everytime a photo was taken. The photographers were behind the big tall camera with a cloth covering his head.
Frankly speaking I can never laugh or say cheese when I took studio photographs. Too scary looking at the big and tall camera with all the lights shining at you.
Neverthless those black and white or brown photos are kept for memories sake.
Hi Katherine,
Got to agree with you. Photo studios are doing a roaring business in those days when almost everyone wanted to have his or her or their photos taken for one purpose or another.
The most popular ones are Rex, Phoenix, Beauty or Ngai Chan besides the ones you’ve mentioned. You can find them in the new town areas, especially Theater Street and Yau Tet Shin Street.
People go for family photos, graduating photos, birthday photos, wedding photos, match-making photos, baby photos, IC and passports photos. Family, graduating and wedding photos used to have a place of honor in most homes – nicely framed up and hung on the wall of living rooms.
They are well, a thing of the past now that we can have our own photos done at home at the computer……. 🙂
