One evening some years ago, my children and I heard a very unique sound floating in the air as we were stepping out from Sungai Wang Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur.
“What sound is that?” we froze and asked each other in amazement.
Totally enchanted and captivated by its beauty, we ran over to where this sound came from.
And do you know what we saw?
A group of about five or six men playing on their bamboo flutes. They were wearing bright red indigenous Andean woolen robes.
“They must be from Peru or Bolivia!” I told my children excitedly. I could recognized their costumes and instruments at once.
“When we get home, both of you go look up in the world map for Peru and Bolivia. These countries are somewhere in South America which is very far away from here, ” I told the children when they gave me puzzled looks.
It was Christmas shopping season and they were performing near the fountain in front of Sungai Wang Shopping Mall. A large crowd of shoppers and passersby had gathered to watch them play.
And when the beautiful sounds of “El Condor Pasa” floated out from their flutes, the crowd went wild. The appreciative crowd cheered and clapped enthusiastically to the rhythm of a song most of us knew so well. Some of us even gyrate to the tune.
This was followed by a few more songs which names I did not know. I think they must be some Andean folk songs.
It was truly a mesmerizing performance that left us completely hypnotized, enthralled and wanting more. Many of us dropped money into their hats which were placed on the floor.
What a pity I did not have my camera with me that day.
Although I have forgotten the rest of the songs now but one will always remained with me forever – El Condor Pasa.
And when I learned that my blogging friend Antares (Magick River) had just came back recently from a very spiritual trip to Machu Picchu, memories of that evening came floating back to me.
Here is El Condor Pasa as played on the bamboo flute which is also called the pan pipe and El Condor Pasa as sang by the famous duo, Simon and Garfunkel back in 1970. Do you still remember this song?
Have a very blissful and peaceful weekend everyone.
Let the beautiful music from the land of the Incas transport you to another world…..a world of deep valleys, crystal clear lakes, beautiful blue hills and white mists.
Very spiritually uplifting.
Magick River ~ 11TH GATE ACTIVATION IN THE SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS
I’d rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
CHORUS
Away, I’d rather sail away
Like a swan that’s here and gone
A man get tied up to the ground
He gives the world
It’s saddest sound,
It’s saddest sound.
CHORUS
I’d rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.
CHORUS
I’d rather be a forest than a street.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
CHORUS
I’d rather feel the earth beneath my feet,
Yes I would.
If I only could,
I surely would.
Thank you Frances. It is one of my favorite song in my younger days. When I was sad I used to sing this song. The lyric express my emotions.
Wind pipes instruments have been my preference to other musical instruments. The flute does emit a very soothing sound to the soul.
You’re welcome, my dear. Like you, I love this song very much and the beautiful sounds emitted from such a humble instrument are truly amazing! 🙂
