Selected images of Lin Dai
I first saw Lin Dai 林黛 (black and white movies) in the Nanyang Theatre in Menglembu in 1958 as a re-run. As we have complimentary tickets to that theatre, it was like kids watching the TV now. My first movie was a musical starring Lin Dai with her male co-star Yim Chun. The two songs that remained etched in my memory was the musical when Yum Chun attempted to court Lin Dai who was his classmate. The musical resembled current American ‘rap” songs with spoken words and interspaced with melodic tunes. In this musical, Yim Chun played a not so accomplished scholar trying to date her classmate who was critical of his scholastic achievements.
The second song that I most remembered was the song about the bright moon in the sky.
These two songs were also the favourite of the young teenage girl who were Chinese educated.
I remembered my neighbour’s young daughter, the sister of Kuan Hon in the Menglembu Boy series, who loved singing that song. Perhaps I had a little crush on her and tease her most of the time and she used those words in the song to counter my moves. She would recite the words that I was no better than Yim Chun. That was more than 50 years ago.
