Hi folks, do you still remember this? I saw it in my Facebook page today and thought it would be nice to share it with those of you who are familiar with Ipoh. It was a famous landmark back in those days but sadly it was torn down to make way for a car park. Sad!
Too bloody bad there wasn’t even a Historical Preservation Commission then and there !It would have preserved this Quaint Architectural Style of Building! Georgetown, Penang is surey different with my friend Chartered Architect Ong Keng Poh’s watch and the business of keeping beautiful buildings. He is the son-in-law of the late First Chief Minister of Georgetown Penang and Wellesley Dr. Lim Chong Eu MD.That’s why the First PRemier of Malaysia Tendku Abdul Rahman also retired there to Georgetown with his Chinese Malaysian Friends !

The good old Pat Kok Lou….I remember having birthday dinners and buying pomelos. When I was in Ipoh 3 weeks ago it was sad to see the famous landmark flatten… it funny I cannot remember those side road names but once I or others mention this building we are on the same page! 🙂
They are building a new high storey commercial lot there. Don’t know what is happening but businessman & developers are becoming very commercial on their investment. They just tear down & decide what they want & the Authority always blend to them. What a shame!
In the early 70s there was an aircond record shop just ahead of the group of people on the 2nd floor. I used to go there with an empty cassette tape to let them record down for me from a selection of songs I pick out from the records on display there. Of course it was illegal but one cared & most record shops in Ipoh have this service. Buying an original record was too expensive & most records have only a few good songs I like. The finished product can be collected usually 2 days later. It sure beats buying pirated cassette tapes which were available everywhere & their sound quality sucks.
Nowadays most Pop Songs and Clasical Music can be Accessed on the Internet on your Tube formats and Audios in most Languages too, the miracle and magic of science has once again given the People heir aide-memoirs and Encore performances ! Old Landmarks like the Lau Par Sar or Pat Kok Lau or Malaysian Markets have materiality to the elderly folks who were children that were in kind familiar environment of the buy and sell of the free market. When Pat Kok Lau was demolished I am sure these elderly citizens got emotionally traumatized and reminded that they too will soon be demolished by age and bad health !That’s why ancient Old England and UK have very genteel old folks as the Historical Preservation Commissions there are very activie ! The Elderly not only live better but also enjoy tyhe Twilight Years with Grace and Love of the Government in Community Services. In old US Cities like Greater Boston, San Francisco, New York City even Preservation of Old Architectural Buildings is almost de riguer as the Air we breathe ! Untok Apa, ? Keselamataan dan Kehidupaan Panjang untok Rmai Raayat !

it was torn down because age had caught up with it. It was no longer structurally sound. Spalling of the concrete was noticeable.
Too bloody sad they can’t do renovations and repairs that can enhance the architectural value of de place. Modernization has its place but imgaine the elderly people who grew up with that building with its trade and Flow, how traumatic it must be for them to see it bull-dozed down, its like they too were about to go to the their graves by being bull-dozed rigorously !
