I did not even realize these photos existed until my brother handed them to me last week when I was back in Ipoh.
They have been sitting inside my second aunt’s store-room for ages, gathering dust. They were taken by her husband.
My siblings, cousins and I were on an outing to the Japanese Garden and Sam Poh Cave in Ipoh.
Aunt, uncle and cousins used to stay with my family at 188 Hugh Low Street too. They stayed upstairs and we, downstairs.
I am sure many of you out there had taken similar photos at these locations too. They were very popular back then.
Can you guess the year this photo was taken? And can you spot who is yours truly? 🙂

I couldn’t even begin to guess the year, and I’m usually no good at recognizing folks from their childhood pictures, but I’ll give it a go. . They’re all cute kids, but I’m going to select the little girl on the near end in the second picture. I’ve never met you, of course, but the girl in the middle doesn’t look to me anything like your picture. The other three are boys.
Is my Sherlock Holmes hat on straight today?
Hi Tom,
Your guesses are as good as Sherlock Holmes’ 🙂
These photos were taken in 1969, the same year as the infamous racial riots in Malaysia. I was not in school yet.
Yes, I was the youngest girl in all these photos. I was wearing a little red dress matched with a pair of red Mary Jane. The other girl was my third sister. She was in a turqouise colored dress and white shoes.
The youngest boy was my cousin brother, two years my senior. The boy on the right was my only brother while the one in the middle was my cousin.
Oh was this taken in Japanese Garden? I think I have a similar photo at that bridge 😛 You are the youngest girl in the photo, yes?
Hi Barb,
The top two photos were taken in Japanese Garden while the bottom two were taken in Sam Poh Cave. These locations, together with Perak Cave and DR Seenivasagam Park were the most popular spots for shutterbugs back in those days but now, hardly anyone goes to these places anymore. Yes, I was the youngest girl in all these photos. 🙂
Hi Ipohgal:
Glad u managed to get hold of these old childhood pics. I feel photos such as these are priceless as they capture a moment in time from yrs gone by for posterity. You have an awesome memory to remember the color of the dresses and shoes from way back in 1969!! 🙂
Hi rawhide8,
These four are not the only ones. I have a few more which I will put up here over the next several weeks.
As for the dresses and shoes, well, they are about the only decent clothing we girls have in those days. We used to wear them very often, hence their colors got stuck in my mind, right up to this day. I can even remember the design and texture! 🙂 My dress have white laces while sister’s have gold buttons.
The boys are luckier – being boys and so cherished by grandma and aunt, they have more shirts and short pants than they ever need. 😦
Good old photos. They are priceless memories of our childhood. Every year I will browse through my childhood album. It bring back a lot of growing up memories. I will show this to my boy when he grow up too 🙂
And you can compare whether your child or children looks like you or not as kids. 🙂
